An officer’s keen eye and a dog’s nose for crime led to the arrest of a Williamsburg man Tuesday night.
Williamsburg K9 Officer Brandon Prewitt said he was driving through the Brush Arbor community when he spotted a suspicious vehicle. When he pulled in behind the vehicle, the driver turned into a parking space and exited the vehicle. Public Affairs Officer Shawn Jackson described the suspicious behavior, saying, “He tensed up, very quickly parked his car and then started walking away, clearly trying to avoid the officer... At that time, the officer knew something was wrong.”
Suspecting that the driver had a reason for not wanting to be seen by officers, Officer Prewitt allowed his K9 partner “Rico” to track the scent of the suspect, and in a different portion of the apartment complex, police found and detained 36-year-old Jason D. Brown.
He was led back to the parking lot where the K9 unit sniffed around Brown’s car. Officer Jackson said “Rico” alerted to the vehicle, signifying the probable presence of drugs. Upon searching the car, Officer Prewitt found a bag of a white powdery substance believed to be methamphetamine. A syringe was also allegedly found in Brown’s car.
Prewitt arrested Brown without incident and charged him with first-degree possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
On July 19, 2005, Brown pled guilty to the charge of manufacturing methamphetamine stemming from an arrest in February of that year. He served five years probation stemming from that incident.
