A 12-year-old Knox County boy who was cleaning a shotgun accidentally fired the gun, killing his younger sister.
Kentucky State Police are investigating the deadly shooting, which took place Tuesday afternoon at a mobile home on Old Farm Road in Cannon.
According to a release from KSP, the boy was cleaning the gun when it accidentally discharged just before 2 p.m., striking his sister in the neck while she was watching television.
Nine-year-old Ambria M. Dunn was taken to Knox County Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
A neighbor, who asked not to be identified, said the family had been renting the trailer on his property for several years. The children — Ambria, her older brother, and a set of young twin girls — lived with their father, David Dunn.
Three KSP cruisers were parked at the family’s home Tuesday, and officers could be seen interviewing family members and taking a rifle away from the home.
“The little boy wasn’t saying nothing, he was just sitting there. I’d say he’s tore all to pieces,” the neighbor said.
Funeral arrangements for Ambria are pending with Hopper Funeral Home.
Both Ambria and her brother attended Barbourville Independent Schools.
The case is still under investigation by Detective Jason York with the Kentucky State Police Harlan Post.
