Assault suspect caught by Corbin PD

The man wanted by Corbin police for assaulting another man with a knife during a dispute last weekend was arrested Wednesday.

They found Junior Smith, 50, of Corbin after Col. David Maiden of the Corbin Police Department received a tip that Smith was hiding in an apartment complex at 105 11th Street. Police found Smith hiding in the bathroom of one of the apartments. He was taken into custody without incident, and still had in his possession the knife that was used in the stabbing last Saturday night.

Smith was charged with second-degree assault, and had a bench warrant out on him for previous possession of drug charges. He was jailed in the Whitley County Detention Center in Williamsburg.

Smith was being sought by police with a warrant out for his arrest, after an incident last Saturday around 11:36 p.m. at an apartment complex at 604 1/2 5th Street in Corbin, where Robert Lawson lived.

According to police, witnesses reported Lawson attempted to get between Smith and another resident, Sara Miller, during an argument in which Miller reported she had slapped by Smith. Lawson attempted to get between the two and at that point, Smith stabbed Lawson in the abdomen with a pocket knife.

Smith fled the scene before officers arrived.

Assisting Col. Maiden in the arrest was Major Rob Jones of the Corbin Police Department.
