Banquet for Laurel first responders this weekend

CORBIN — By Carl Keith Greene / Staff Writer

Downtown London’s going to be full of food this weekend as the second annual Farmers Market Chili Cook-off begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, following a Friday night banquet for Laurel County’s first responders, recognized for their work with an awards presentation.

More than 600 responders and their families will meet at 6 p.m. on the courthouse square for opening ceremonies, dinner, music by the U.S. Air Force’s “Wild Blue Country” band, comments regarding the history of London’s and Laurel County’s early first responders and presentation of plaques to the departments.

A dozen volunteer fire departments that serve Laurel County, a rescue squad, two emergency management and hazardous materials representatives, the ambulance service, the 911 Communications Center, four law enforcement agencies, the county road, solid waste and animal control departments as well as the city public works department will be honored.

That will be followed by special recognitions and awards.

The presentations will be followed by patriotic music by “Wild Blue Country.”

On Saturday at the Farmers Market, Chili Cook-off chili cookers can make their own version of the south-of-the-border entree and offer tastes of their own concoctions for a dollar each.

Proceeds from the tastings go to United Way of Laurel County.

United Way raised funds for more than 20 organizations in Laurel County last year and hopes to raise even more this year.
