A Whitley County Grand jury did not indict Whitley County 911 Director Chuck Davis on a charge related to missing money when Davis worked as a detective under former sheriff Lawrence Hodge.
The grand jury’s indictments were handed down Tuesday along with a report that stated Davis’ case was found to be no true bill.
The Whitley County Grand Jury heard evidence concerning Davis during its meeting on Sept. 5, but continued the case to be investigated further, according to court documents. The grand jury was set to meet again Oct. 1.
The case regarding Davis involved an investigation into theft failure to make required disposition of property over $500 but less than $10,000.
Whitley County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Greg Pace, who was recently assigned to the London office of the FBI to investigate public corruption and organized crime, conducted the investigation into the alleged missing money, according to Whitley County Sheriff Harrell.
Harrell said the investigation encompassed Davis’ duties as a detective from when he worked under Hodge. Harrell said he talked to the commonwealth’s attorney and was advised to take it before the grand jury.
According to Harrell, grand jury investigations can be continued at the request of those being investigated if they wish to testify or present evidence to the grand jury, though he said he could not confirm that this was the reason the grand jury’s investigation had been continued in September.
Davis was one of 27 witnesses who testified before a specially-called Whitley County Grand Jury that investigated Hodge and indicted him on multiple charges of abuse of public trust and tampering with physical evidence.
He was hired as the Whitley County 911 Director in June 2010. Davis is also chief of the Whitley County Police Department. That department has existed as an official entity for several years but has no staff other than the chief.
Davis declined to comment after no true bill announcement was made in Whitley County Circuit Court.
