Surprise birthday tea held for Ruth Thomas-Burkhart

Special to the Times-Tribune

A surprise birthday tea was held recently for Ruth Thomas-Burkhart at the Thomas Farm in Rockholds. Over 50 people attended the noon tea and dinner later that evening.

For some it had been 60 years since they had been back to the farm. Of course, much had changed. The road that runs through the farm was not paved at that time, and most of the yard was dirt, which Ruth remembers sweeping!

The tea was hosted by Debbie Keaton and Betty Philpot. A large sign welcomed the ladies to the “Pink Rose Tea Room.’ Centerpieces on white linens, a variety of collectible rose design teacups, crystal and pink candles made for a beautiful table scape. A walk down memory lane through photos were placed on the table and made for a lot of conversation.

Josh Keaton, grandson of Betty Philpot, was a server at the tea and won all the ladies’ hearts.

Ruth retired from Fort Knox, has been a member of the Eastern Stars for 50 years and held an office for 46 years. She has traveled abroad and in all USA states.

Ruth was dressed as a southern belle and escorted to the tea by her friend, Joe Barany.

Her daughters and grandchildren attend the dinner, adding another surprise to the evening.

Following dinner, Ruth was roasted, her brother, Robert Thomas, told funny memories of his say with her when he was a young boy. Brothers Ken, Marvin, Jim and has sisters told of happenings on the farm where they grew up.

Ruth closed the evening with a speech, thanking everyone for a beautiful day filled with many memories for tomorrow. She said it was such a wonderful blessing to be able to celebrate her 80th birthday at the old home place where she grew up.
