Moving-in day, Sunday, Aug. 22, was the beginning of a flurry of activities on the campus of University of the Cumberlands as new and returning students arrived to start the 2010-11 academic year. With the arrival of 457 freshmen and 51 transfer students, as well as increased enrolment in graduate courses, officials at the University expect the total number of students to exceed 3,000, a record for the school. Classes begin Aug. 25.

Sunday evening, the members of the freshman class attended their first Convocation on campus and experienced their first academic processional as they watched the faculty members march into Gatliff Chapel wearing their traditional robes and regalia. Following a brief welcome by Dr. Jim Taylor, Cumberlands’ president, several upperclassmen explained, using humor, how students should conduct themselves during the weekly, required Convocation services. Madison McCalmon, a senior business administration major and member of the football team, addressed the newcomers. Speaking from his own experiences, he urged them to, “Get involved.”

At the end of the program, Taylor asked all the freshmen to put on the official “Class of 2014” pins they had been given earlier. They will be asked to wear the pins again at Commencement when they graduate.
