Members of the Bright Star Theatre Company of Asheville, N.C. performed for Saint Camillus Academy students Monday with two very different plays, sharing a similar message.
Actors Meghan Hoffman and Desmond Bing brought to life various leaders of the Civil Rights movement, including Dr. King and Rosa Parks, in “Struggle for Freedom: the Martin Luther King Jr. Story.”
The historical play was performed for Saint Camillus’ older students.
For the younger audience, Hoffman and Bing presented, “Sadie’s Spectacular Saturday,” the tale of a caterpillar who must deal with a bullying roach.
In the end, Sadie not only confronts her attacker and uses non-violent methods to end her bullying, but she turns into a beautiful butterfly.
“It’s still teaching the same principles, like you can’t judge someone based on their outward appearance alone,” Bing said. “And no matter what you look like, you might still get picked on, you just have to be who you are and be happy with who you are.”
