Whitley High renovation likely to begin August

CORBIN — By Megan Williamson and Becky Manley / Staff Writers

A $9.6 million project to renovate and add onto Whitley County High School will likely begin in August, according to district officials.

Next month’s expected groundbreaking follows Thursday’s meeting of the Whitley County Schools Board during which members heard details on the upcoming bond sale that will fund the project.

Board members approved obtaining a low-interest loan of $8.165 million that will be repaid over 17 years, officials said. Although the final interest rate could vary based upon the market, officials said they expect the loan interest to be about 5 percent.

The project will update the school’s main entrance and heating and air conditioning equipment, as well as add a wing that will house the new freshman academy, officials said. Updates will also be made to the cafeteria.

The addition is needed to accommodate the district’s growing enrollment, officials said.

The board also approved a bond sale of $7.6 million in order to refinance the district’s existing debt it incurred when the intermediate school was constructed, officials said.

Construction at the high school is expected to be completed in 2012, officials said.
