A check presented to St. Camillus Academy from CSX Thursday will cover the cost of the first 20 Foster Holly trees that will encircle the school’s new Memorial Garden.
The $2,600 is from the transportation company’s Inclusion Program.
CSX representative Rebecca Gardner presented the check to Sister Mary Bezold in front of an archway that will be part of the garden when it is finished.
The archway was built from salvaged material gathered when the former school building was razed.
Gardner and Sister Mary were surrounded by St. Camillus students, members of the garden committee, other CSX employees and Principal Patty Beckert.
“I’m really excited and looking forward to when the project is completed to enhance and beautify our campus even more than it already is,” Beckert said. “It will be a place where students can come out and play and eat and pray.”
The Memorial Garden will remember former Sisters of Divine Providence and others who have taught and worked at the school over its century of life. It is being built on the site of an early school building.
“Not only has CSX contributed money for the trees, its Inclusion Program has recently generated $170 for the garden through a program that provides $10 for each hour an employee spends on the garden project,” said Gardner.
The project is expected to cost nearly $16,000.
Gardner said CSX is “encouraging not only diversity but community responsibility.”
Barbara Woolery, a member of the garden committee, noted, “St. Camillus students are environmental stewards. We were the PRIDE campus of the year last year.”
“The garden would continue the school’s environmental work that the children can use as a learning experience. That’s why we were really excited to provide the trees,” added Gardner.
The garden will include marble benches and marble slabs taken from the old building that will bear the names of “every sister that ever stepped foot here in Corbin to make a difference.”
