Corbin’s Readifest prepares students, parents for school year

By Adam Sulfridge / Staff Writer

Families were lined out the door of the Corbin Middle School gym Tuesday.  Corbin’s Family Resources Youth Services Center (FRYSC) held its annual Readifest, an event in which students and parents are encouraged to visit and help prepare for the upcoming school year.

Of course, there were free goodies on hand to help entice families to take part in the activities. FRYSC gave away backpacks and bags of supplies which included pencils, paper, and sharpeners — essentially everything a student needs to start the school year out right.

The event was about more than just collecting freebies, though. Many booths offered information for parents.  Among such educational booths was the Whitley County Health Department, where Kathy Lay and a co-worker performed body mass index tests, which can help determine whether one’s weight is healthy. The Health Department also handed out skin cream, pens and informational brochures.

Dr. Angela Morris performed hearing tests on students, and Stan of the Wal-Mart Vision Center performed vision tests.  Both services were offered to families free of charge.

Representatives from Cumberland River Comprehensive Care handed out informational packets in hopes of increasing rape awareness.
