North Laurel shocks crosstown rival

Nobody gave the North Laurel Jaguars a chance coming into the 13th Region Tournament, especially since James Conway’s squad was the only team in the eight-team tournament to have a losing record.

Well, the naysayers better open their eyes because North Laurel is only one win away from capturing its first-ever 13th Region championship after defeating crosstown rival South Laurel, 62-53, during semifinal action of the 13th Region Tournament on Saturday.

The Jaguars did everything right against the inconsistent Cardinals and now Conway’s squad is one step closer to playing at Rupp Arena.

“My guys really deserved this,” Conway said. “I’m proud of them. They really busted their tails today. I thought we could have folded early in the season after starting the season 0-6, but they found a way and never quit believing in themselves.

“All of the credit goes to the players,” he added. “I know it sounds simple, but we knew we had to rebound and play defense and we did that.”
