What a difference a year makes.
After finishing the 2005 season with a 3-7 record, the Williamsburg girls golf team has brought it’s game up more than a notch this season.
The Lady Jackets are sporting a 9-0 record and have notched wins over Corbin (2), Middlesboro (2), Clay County (2), North Laurel (1), South Laurel (1) and Garrard County (1).
As her team gets set to head to regional tournament play, coach Connie Pettit said the difference is obvious.
“Our maturity level is the biggest factor this season,” she said. “And the fact we have practiced harder and a lot more and we have really come together as a team.”
When it comes to competition, Pettit said her team finally realizes what they have to do to win matches.
“Last year I felt like our team was in too much competition with themselves,” she said. “Everyone wanted that No. 1 spot and this year they are just focused on playing their best no matter what position they are in.”
When it comes to being in the No. 1 spot this season, Pettit said that’s really not a concern of anyone on the team.
“The biggest reason for that is the last two matches, our No. 5 has brought back the best score,” she said. “What that means is that we have a good all-around team and anyone can lead the way at anytime for us.”
The only senior on the team is Kari Anne Pettit, who coach Pettit said is the obvious leader on and off the course.
“Kari Anne is very vocal and she is an extremely good leader,” Pettit said. “She is older and realizes a few of the things that need to be done to win.”
As far as her team’s chances at the state level, Pettit said she believes things are looking up.
“I really feel like we can compete in the region,” she said. “I am hoping to send at least two girls to state level and that would be very pleasing to me.”
