Beaver Creek 4, Corbin 1

Hart’s Lady Hounds continue to struggle

By Chris Parsons / Staff Writer

Despite dropping to 1-3 during their current trip to Florida, Corbin softball coach Chris Hart said he is pleased with the play of his team.

The Lady Redhounds fell 4-1 to Beaver Creek, Ohio Thursday, dropping their overall record to 2-5.

Felicia Pigg was saddled with the loss and gave up four runs, three of them earned, in the process.

Corbin took an early 1-0 lead, but an inability to get out of the inning in the fourth and fifth innings cost the Lady Redhounds the game.

“I was pleased with the way we played, but I feel like we really let this one get away,” Hart said. “Every run they scored came with two outs in the inning.

“We just couldn’t seem to get that last out or focus on what we were doing with two outs,” he added. “But that is just something we are going to have to work on and get better at in the long run.”

At the plate, Mikkah Rogers led the way for Corbin, reaching base on 2-of-3 attempts, collecting a triple and a single in the game.

Abby Baylor pitched in with a 1-for-3 effort as she doubled in the third inning.

Beaver Creek out-hit the Lady Redhounds 9-8 in the game and won the battle in the errors column as the Lady Redhounds committed one as opposed to none for their opponent.

Despite the loss, an up-beat Hart said he felt good about the way his team was playing at this point and the goals they set for the trip are being met.

“I came down here wanting to get at least one win, yet I was unsure if we could do that,” he said. “We are playing some good teams, they aren’t great, but they are good teams. If you look at the Beaver Creek squad, they beat Whitley County yesterday 12-2, so I think we did a good job to play them as close as we did.

“The big thing is that we wanted to come away from this trip a better team than we were when we got here,” he added. “Looking at some of the things we have accomplished, we have a real good shot at that. We have the one win we thought we could get and we have a good shot at beating Elizabethtown Friday, so I feel real good with what the girls have done as a team.”

Corbin will return to action today when the Lady Redhounds face Elizabethtown at 1 p.m. before heading home to Corbin.
