CORBIN —
What a week it turned out to be for our Tri-County volleyball, soccer and football teams. Some experienced big comeback victories while some tasted bitter defeat, but overall, last week was an exciting one for all of the Tri-County prep sports fans.
What a comeback
Hat’s off to the Corbin Lady Redhound volleyball team for repeating as 13th Region champs and they did it in fine fashion.
After falling behind 2-0, Liberty Roberts' squad rallied while showing true grit by winning three straight sets against rival South Laurel to win the regional title.
Corbin (29-8) will now go for win No. 30 Friday in the first round of the Sweet Sixteen against 1st Region champion Lone Oak. The Purple Flash owns a 35-4 record this season.
Congrats
Also a big tip of the hat goes to Corbin's Vanessa Wiseman and coach Liberty Roberts. Wiseman was named 13th Region Player of the Year while Roberts took home 13th Region Coach of the Year honors. Wiseman has been a pleasure to watch and will go down as one of the best volleyball players in the Tri-County while Roberts has guided Corbin to 50 wins during her first two years as coach of the Lady Redhound volleyball program.
Redemption
How about Armando Cima's Corbin Redhounds winning the 13th Region title in thrilling fashion against North Laurel. Both teams battled hard, but in the end, the Redhounds did just enough to pull off the slim 1-0 win.
Now Corbin will host Perry Central Tuesday at home in the first round of the Sweet Sixteen. The Commodores will come into the game with a 11-6-1 record while Corbin is 13-7-1 on the season.
Back to norm
After seeing their region title streak come to an end at six years in a row in 2011, Todd White's South Laurel Lady Cardinals claimed the 13th Region championship with a 6-0 blanking of Corbin. White has done a fantastic job with the lady Cardinals this season by putting his team against some of the best competition around. The Lady Cardinals started the season being outscored 13-1 while losing their first three games, but recovered by going 14-3-1 the remainder of the season while outscoring their opponents 98-12 during the process.
Great career
A tip of the hat also goes to Corbin's Amerah Dixon, who turned in a fantastic high season for the lady Redhounds. Dixon led the team with 47 goals while finishing with 16 assists. She scored more than 100 goals during her career as a Lady Redhound and she's been a pleasure to cover.
On the grid
Scottie Russell's Knox Central Panthers turned the ball over three times against Russell County and in the end, the Panthers dropped a 35-19 decision to the Lakers. I really thought Knox Central would pull out the win at home.
Williamsburg picked up a big win at home against Lynn Camp and captured its third straight district title in the progress, which is a program-first and Whitley County clinched a home playoff game by running all over Letcher Central. It looks as if the Colonels will be hosting North Laurel in first round action of the class 5A playoffs.
It will be North Laurel's first playoff appearance since 2004 when Greg Duncum's squad almost pulled off an upset against Scott County.
Corbin, Lynn Camp and Whitley County will also be participating in the playoffs, too. The Redhounds clinched a three seed while the Colonels will be a No. 2 and the Wildcats a No. 4.
