W’burg places third in state play

CORBIN — By Les Dixon / Sports Editor

The Williamsburg Lady Yellow Jacket golf team came up short in winning the school’s first-ever state championship this past weekend in Bowling Green, but it did manage to turn in a third place finish.

Williamsburg shot a 346 on Saturday, which allowed the Lady Yellow Jackets to place third with a 693, while Sacred Heart unseated defending champion Green County with a score of 649, while the Lady Dragons finished with a 692.

Shelby County (694), Scott County (695), Notre Dame (710), Glasgow (710), Henry Clay (719), Central Hardin (727), Russell County (729) and Mason County (751) rounded out the top 11 teams.

Williamsburg’s Becky Sharpe started off slow in the state tournament, as she shot an 81 during first round action, which was good enough for 16th place, but her 74 during final round play allowed her to jump nine spots and finish in seventh place, as she finished with a score of 155.

Caldwell County senior Emma Talley won the state championship with a 138, while North Hardin’s Lydia Gumm placed second with a 148, as she edged out South Warren’s Jackie Van Meter (148) in a playoff.

North Laurel junior Caroline Moore placed tied for 17th with a 163, while Williamsburg freshman Bethany Jervis’ 173 was good enough for a 34th place finish. The Lady Yellow Jackets’ Kaylee Akins placed 44th with a 177, while teammates Julia Higginbotham (59th place, 188) and Kacie Cox (73rd, 210) followed.
