SOUTH LAUREL —
The South Laurel Lady Cardinals opened their portion of the 2012 Candy Cane Classic with a 40-34 loss to Somerset Thursday.
Despite taking an early lead that held up until halftime, the Lady Cardinals were outscored 25-14 in the second half, thanks to 11 points by the Lady Jumpers’ Maranda Mills and 10 more from Virginia Scott.
The Lady Cardinals inched ahead 10-9 after the first quarter and were able to extend the lead to 20-15 at halftime.
That’s when the wheels fell off for South Laurel as they only managed to score four points in the third quarter, costing them the lead by the time the fourth quarter started.
Trailing 30-24 with eight minutes to play, the Lady Cardinals were outscored 15-10 in the final period of play and eventually fell, 40-34.
Emily Clonce was the only Lady Cardinal to reach double figures, tallying 10 points in the loss. Taylor Arthur added eight, while Katie Reynolds chipped in six.
The Lady Cardinals will be back in action today when they face Harlan at 4 p.m.
