WILLIAMSBURG — The Corbin Redhounds (11-5, 2-0) improved their district mark to 2-0 Friday, knocking off Williamsburg 64-56 on the road, but it wasn’t always easy.
After holding a 28-25 lead at halftime, the Redhounds extended the margin to 19 points (47-28) by the end of the third quarter after outscoring the Yellow Jackets 19-3 in the period.
That’s when Williamsburg’s offense seemed to come to life.
After trading baskets back and forth early in the third quarter, Williamsburg (3-6, 0-1) mounted a 15-0 run that cut the Redhounds’ lead to 54-49 with just over two minutes to play in the game.
A timeout by Corbin coach Tony Pietrowski seemed to settle the Redhounds down as they kept the lead at five points until they pulled away in the final minute by going eight-for-eight from the free-throw line.
After the game, Pietrowski said he felt like both teams could have played better basketball, but he was happy to get the win.
“I don't know that either team played as well as they felt like they could have," Pietrowski said. “We showed stretches of good play, with that said we have to work on execution and effort.
“Glad to get the district win, especially on the road," he added. “Coach Robinson will make his team better, so we will have to play a higher level next time we see them.”
Corbin big-man Robbie Igo led the way for the Redhounds, scoring 18 points before fouling out with with 23 seconds to play in the game. Zach Farley added 15, seven of which came when he made seven-of-eight free throws in the final quarter to help seal the win.
Williamsburg head coach Patrick Robinson said he was pleased with the way his team didn't quit, but said after the way his team played in the third quarter, they were lucky to be in the game.
“You just can’t get down 20 points to Corbin because they shoot free throws too good to get back in the game,” Robinson said. “I thought we did some things defensively to hurt them, but you can’t score three points in the third quarter and expect to beat anybody.
“I thought we did some good things, but we were really going through the motions,” he added. “We were running our offense pretty well, but we just weren’t finishing and you can't play that way against good teams and expect to win games.”
Williamsburg was led by Corey Shelton's 19-point effort, while Skylar Griffith added 15.
