BARBOURVILLE — The Barbourville Lady Tigers are off to the hottest start in the Tri-County after improving to 5-0 on the season with a 69-40 win over Model Saturday.
Kara Erslan paced the Lady Tigers with 23 points en route to the win, while Kelsey Erslan added 14 and Amber Mills chipped in 12.
Not only is Barbourville winning games, they are also scoring a lot of points. Through the five wins, Andrea Hillard’s squad is averaging 69 points per game. Despite the impressive numbers on offense, she was quick to point to the defense as the key to the Lady Tigers’ success.
“I told the girls at the start of the season that we are the kind of team that a steal can lead to a layup most of the time,” Hillard said. “They realize that and they are playing good defense, which has led to us winning games.”
Barbourville jumped out to a 25-13 lead to start the gameand used a 21-7 second quarter to push that gap to 46-20 at halftime.
Another impressive showing in the third quarter led to a 65-20 lead with eight minutes to play in the game as Barbourville cruised to the 69-40 win.
Despite having a sizeable lead for most of the game, Hillard said she was pleased with the way her team is able to keep pushing as opposed to getting comfortable.
“These girls are not going to get lazy when they get a big lead and they’ve proven that early on in the season,” Hillard said. “A lot of times that can get you in trouble, so I’m really glad they don’t do that.”
Barbourville will be back in action Thursday when they travel to Corbin to face the Lady Redhounds.
“We’re looking forward to Corbin because they’re going to be one of the best teams we’ve played so far,” Hillard said. “They’ll give us a chance to see where we’re really at right now in the season.”
