Bouncing back

After a disappointing loss to Rockcastle County, some people might have wondered how the North Laurel Lady Jaguars would perform when they took the floor against the Monticello Lady Trojans at North Laurel High School on Monday night.
The Lady Jaguars were more than up for the challenge as they held Monticello without a field goal in the second quarter en route to a 60-30 beatdown in front of the home fans.
“We suffered due to a very bad start against Rockcastle County,” North Laurel coach Roy Bowling said. “They just jumped on us and we were just too wild with the ball.”
The Lady Jaguars showed no signs of a letdown against the Lady Trojans. They used a balanced and efficient offensive attack in the first quarter that saw four different players score four points each in the frame. North Laurel led by a score of 18-6 at that point.
It was during the second quarter that the Lady Jaguars turned up the heat defensively by not allowing Monticello to score a single field goal during the period.
“Monticello can really shoot, so we played like we needed to play all the time,” Bowling said. “The girls did things tonight that they haven’t managed to do in quite a long time.”
The Lady Jaguars were able to extend their lead to 32-7 at the half due in large part to their point guard Tamara Crawford, who managed to pour in six of her game-high 19 points in the second quarter.
In the second half, the Lady Trojans seemed to find their rhythm. Monticello was able to knock down three treys in an effort to close the gap.
North Laurel would not be denied on this night however. Crawford and Center Cheyenne Madden contributed six points and four points respectively to push the third quarter lead out to 50-22.
With 4:04 remaining in the fourth quarter, the North Laurel Lady Jaguars sealed the deal when Crawford connected on a beautiful pass to guard Kelsie Smith, as she was streaking to the basket for an easy lay-in.
The Lady Jaguars glided to a 60-30 victory as reserves finished out the remainder of the game.
North Laurel’s schedule does not get any easier from here on out as the Whitley County Lady Colonels are up next for the Lady Jaguars.
