CORBIN — Tony Pietrowski’s Corbin Redhounds caught 12th Region favorite Pulaski County at the wrong time.
The Maroons (10-3) entered Tuesday’s matchup riding a four-game win streak, which included an 80-66 win over defending 12th Region champion Southwestern just two days ago and continued their impressive play by defeating Corbin, 90-65, in the Hometown Bank Classic.
The Redhounds (10-5) were riding high as well — winning five of their last six games, including going 3-0 this past week to capture the Cumberland Falls Invitational Tournament championship.
"Our team was physically and mentally drained from the two Christmas tournaments we played,” Pietrowski said. “We are a team based on a high level of effort and execution and we didn’t show either tonight. This was a teaching point for our team
“We have to regroup and have two good days of practice with Williamsburg coming up on Friday,” he added. “I fully expect our team to rebound and do the things that led us to winning the Cumberland Falls Invitational Tournament.”
Kody Johnson scored seven of his 12 points during the first quarter, while the Maroons connected on eight-of-13 shot attempts to take a commanding 20-9 edge.
Pulaski County’s Taylor Gover caught fire during the final three quarters, finishing with a game-high 27 points while hitting three three-pointers.
The Maroons led 38-20 at halftime and 63-42 going into the fourth quarter before outscoring the Redhounds 27-23 during the game’s final eight minutes.
Pulaski County finished the game hitting 31-of-61 shot attempts from the floor, including a five-of-14 effort from three-point range while Corbin hit 21-of-55 shot attempts and two-of-14 from beyond the arc. Kevin Goins led the Redhounds with 14 points while Hunter Grubb added a 10-point effort.
