The Corbin Redhound bowling team was eliminated from the region tournament in the first round last season and they're looking for redemption this season.
This year, the squad has improved immensely according to coach Kenny Kyser, finishing with an overall record of 10-4. Kyser said given the improvement his team has made, he expects them to be in the mix when it comes to the region title.
Add the fact that the tournament will be played at the Redhounds' home lanes, Forest Bowling Lanes in Corbin, Kyser said everyone involved is excited about the opportunity.
“We weren't initially supposed to host this year, but it came about and everyone is really looking forward to the opportunity,” Kyser said. “I really have to thank our athletic director Thom Smith for all he's done to get this organized because he had to get things together pretty quick, but this ain't his first rodeo and he's got everything lined out for us.
“We're really excited about hosting this thing because we've bowled well at home,” Kyser added. “The fact our kids will be closer to home will hopefully make them a little more comfortable in the situation.”
Not only will being at home make his team more comfortable, it may also benefit the Redhounds once the balls start rolling down the lane. Kyser said the setup of each facility is different and that his team has done well at home this year, finishing 6-2 with.
“Each house is definitely different and that's something that good teams will adjust to,” Kyser said. “We're going to go with our house shot because we've done well with it this season and we've seen some good teams struggle with it because teams get comfortable with the way they do their own at home.
“We've had some kids that have consistently put up 200 games and that's big for us at home,” he added. “Hopefully we can continue to bowl well at home and maybe jump out as a dark horse in this thing.”
As for the tournament itself, Kyser said the format is pretty basic. Teams will bowl to decide the seeding for the actual tournament.
Each team will bowl a complete game and the seeds will be decided by total pin count after dropping the lowest score. With 13 teams in the region, the top three seeds will get the advantage of a first-round bye.
After the seeding is done, the teams will compete in a best-of-five bakers tournament. In the bakers tournament, five bowlers will bowl a complete game, meaning bowler A will bowl the first and sixth frames, while bowler B will bowl the second and seventh frames and so on.
In the end, Kyser said he feels his team hosting the tournament will benefit the area in several different ways. From tourism dollars to drawing in new athletes, Kyser said the sky is the limit.
“We have quite a few teams that have to travel over two hours, so they may stay and spend money here in the area,” he said. “This is also a chance for some local people and younger kids to get out and see what we are doing with this program.
“You can also expect some scouts to be on hand because this is a way to get into college that kids didn't have three years ago here,” he added. “We have two schools close by that are powerhouses in their divisions, so they'd be crazy not to.”

The Corbin Lady Redhounds went into Thursday’s game against Middlesboro riding a five-game win streak and winners of seven of the past nine. The streak didn’t last though, as the Lady Yellow Jackets outplayed Corbin to a tune of 10-0 in five innings.
