Luke Stewart got off to a slow start in his basketball career, but thanks to his senior teammates, he has stepped up and played a huge role during the Redhounds’ run at two straight region titles.
Stewart started playing basketball during his seventh grade year after much encouragement from fellow senior, Isaac Wilson.
“Isaac helped me out a lot,” he said. “The other seniors have also helped me catch up. They talked me into playing and I’m glad they did. Playing high school ball is the best thing that has ever happened to me.”
Stewart has always embraced his role at Corbin, whether it was making his teammates better in practice or in a game.
“Last year, I made a difference in practice,” he said. “I didn’t see much floor time. We had guys ahead of me and I was fine with that, I just wanted to win. I’m happy I am getting to make a difference and getting more minutes this year. It feels good to be a part of our team’s success. I’m ready to cause an upset.”
You can say Stewart has became a role player behind the other three seniors, Isaac Wilson, Madison Johnson and Aaron Manns. He feels he is not the only player that has embraced his role on the team.
“Everyone has embraced their role this year,” he said. “That’s what makes us so good.”
While it’s hard to pinpoint what type of player Stewart is, his coach, Tony Pietrowski gave it a shot.
“He’s the kind of kid you want in your program,” he said. “He brings us a good mix. He brings a lot of hustle and has improved offensively.”
Pietrowski likes the way Stewart encourages his teammates and feels he brings a lot of energy to the team.
“I call him the rah, rah guy,” Pietrowski added. “He gets behind his teammates and gets them pumped up.”
While Stewart is excited about a return trip to Rupp Arena for the Sweet Sixteen, he admits that saying goodbye to Corbin will be hard to do.
“It’s sad,” he said. “Just knowing that my high school career is about over. Win or lose, at least I’ll know we’ve put everything into it.”
