MT. VERNON – The Barbourville Tigers lost a heartbreaker on the road Tuesday as the Rockcastle County Rockets made good on a last second shot attempt to grab a 70-68 win.
After the loss, Barbourville head coach Dinky Phipps made no bones about the reason his team came up short.
"We made some mistakes at the end and you can't do that if you want to win games," Phipps said. "In games like this, you really have to execute down the stretch if you expect to come out on top.
"It's a tough way to lose, but we just have to get back at it Friday and try to come up with a win," he added.
Devin Mills led the way for Barbourville with 27 points, while Alexander Phipps chipped in 12 and Jason Mills added 10.
The Tigers held a 68-66 lead going into the final seconds, but a foul sent the Rockets to the free throw line where they made 1-of-2 attempts to trim the lead to 68-67.
After the second free throw came up short, the ball was loose but a Rockcastle County player managed to get the final shot off in time as it went in to give the Rockets a 70-68 win.
