The Williamsburg Lady Yellow Jackets golf team turned in an impressive showing in the Touchstone Energy’s All ‘A’ Classic State Golf Tournament by placing third.
The Lady Yellow Jackets shot a 329 at Richmond’s Arlington Golf Course, which was six shots off pace of first place finisher Glasgow, who turned in a 323. Green County placed second with a 325, while Owen County (342) and Villa Madonna (360) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
“Our girls played really well this past weekend,” Williamsburg coach Jeff Sharpe said. “This was by far their best tournament score as a team. They have played well in the past, but never really put it all together in the bigger tournaments.”
Sharpe said his team’s third place finish should give his players the confidence they need to compete later this season at the region and state level.
“I know this gives us a lot of confidence knowing that we can compete with Glasgow and the defending state champions Green County,” he said. “Hopefully, we can continue to play well through the region tournament in a couple of weeks. It has been fun watching these young ladies develop and grow as golfers on and off the course.”
Glasgow’s Blair Dennison took home first place honors by shooting a 73, while Williamsburg’s Becky Sharpe placed second with a 75. Kaylee Akins shot an 81 for the Lady Yellow Jackets, while Julia Higginbotham shot a career low tournament round of 86. Bethany Hamblin finished with an 87 and Deavon Lynch shot a 125.
Williamsburg will be back in action Saturday by participating in the Henry Clay Invitational at the Lakeside Golf Course before hosting North Laurel Tuesday to finish regular season play.
