The Lady Redhounds got off to a blistering start, but stumbled before holding on for a 25-3, 25-20 win over Jackson County to advance to the second round of the 13th Region Tournament.
“We came out ready to take care of business,” Corbin coach Alecia Elwell said. “I got to play everybody and it was nice to see everyone actually contribute.”
Torri Osborne ignited the Lady Redhounds with 10 straight points on serve including three aces to take a 12-1 advantage in the first set.
The Lady Redhounds dominated the net as Vanessa Wiseman, Jamie King and Petra Kover added kills to pull ahead 16-2.
Kover took over late in the first set and scored eight points on serve including seven aces to claim a 25-3 victory.
The Lady Generals tried to fight back in the second set and actually took a 5-4 advantage before Corbin responded.
“We came out on our heels in that second set,” Elwell said. “We didn’t have the same serving from the first set, and didn’t have the same passing or setting. I would have liked to have kept the fire that we had in the first set, but we didn’t.”
Corbin struggled to put the match away in the second set as it went back and forth with Jackson County making plays.
The Lady Redhounds led 15-13 and Elwell decided to talk things over.
“I wanted to know if they were done making mental mistakes,” Elwell said. “We had so many mental lapses and they started to stack up. We did just enough to win.”
Osborne responded with five points on serve including two aces to grab a 25-20 victory.
The Lady Redhounds were led by Osborne with 17 points.
“Jackson County stepped up,” Elwell added. “They would not give up and I give them a lot of credit for fighting back.”
