Emily Gaines is preparing for another season of South Laurel softball, but this time it’s different.
After signing a letter of intent to play for the University of Kentucky, she will be able to concentrate on softball without worrying about what college she will attend.
“I feel relieved,” Gaines said. “I wanted to get the pressure off so I could have fun this season.”
Signing before her senior season was something Emily’s father Scott also felt was the right decision.
“I’m real excited for Emily,” He said. “It’s a big plus getting this over with. She can concentrate on a good senior year.”
Scott is on the coaching staff at South Laurel and has been on the field teaching Emily since she started playing softball. His contribution hasn’t gone unnoticed.
“I would like to thank my dad and give him all the credit,” she said. “He pushes me to work as hard as I can. He has always been there for me. I couldn’t have done it without him.”
Emily is closing in on the state record for most career hits to go along with having the most hits and most doubles in South Laurel history.
“She has worked hard for a very long time and it’s paid off,” Gaines said. “College will be a big challenge for her, but I think she will do well. The Kentucky coaches have a lot of confidence in her.”
Emily has played volleyball and softball under South Laurel coach Kaye Smith and Smith thinks she will be a valuable player for Kentucky as she has been for South Laurel.
“She is a great athlete with a great attitude,” Smith said. “She has a great work ethic and I think she will be an asset for the University of Kentucky. I am so happy for her and her family.”
Emily is confident in her abilities and is looking forward to being a Wildcat after she leaves South Laurel.
“It was an easy decision,” she admitted. “On my visit I really liked everything about it. I knew that was where I wanted to go. I’m really excited. I really don’t know what to say.”
Although Emily is right handed she has always batted left handed.
“They like the fact that I’m a left handed hitter,” she said. “They also feel like I’m flexible in the field. I will just be playing in the field, I won’t be pitching.”
Emily signed in front of several friends, classmates and teammates. She wanted to thank everyone for their support.
“So many people have supported me over the years,” she added. “They have come to my games and have really shown a lot of support. It’s great to have that many people believe in you.”
Emily is excited about her college future, but says she has a goal to reach before then.
“My main goal is to make it back to the state tournament,” she said. “It’s been a long time. We have a young team, but we can do it.”
Gaines will be able to focuse on leading the Cardinals without any distractions this season.
