The Corbin Middle 8th Grade Lady Redhounds completed a spectacular season with a trip to the Final Four.
“They’ve got a lot of heart,” Corbin coach Bo Roaden said. “We had to fight back a few times and they never gave up.”
The Lady Redhounds are guard dominated to say the least as they put five guards on the floor at all times.
“We play a five guard lineup,” Roaden said. “Anybody can bring the ball up the floor. We are usually smaller than everyone we play, but we are quicker.”
In the first game of the state tournament they dropped a tough 51-48 contest to Powell County.
“Everyone has to play a play-in game to be seeded in the winners bracket or the losers bracket,” Roaden said. “It was a hard fought game, but we came up on the short end.”
The Lady Redhounds then defeated Bracken County 35-28 in the second game. Kayla Wilson led the way with 10 points. Lindsey Barton chipped in nine points and Miranda Wilson added six points.
The small Lady Redhounds overcame a tall LaRue County team 38-32. After falling behind 18-17 in the first half, the Lady Redhounds managed to pull out the victory. Miranda Wilson led all scores with 12 points including three three-pointers.
“We came in and out hustled them,” Roaden said. “They were probably the best team as far as athletes we’ve ever come up against.”
Corbin faced a tough Clay County team during their fourth game, but came away with a 28-24 victory that qualified them for the final four.
They fell behind 17-9, but used a 13 point third quarter to fight back. Miranda Wilson scored five points in the third quarter and finished with 13 points for the game.
“The girls were excited and emotionally drained,” Roaden said. “They had to settle down and get ready to play in the final four. They ony had 45 minutes before the final four game.”
In the final four, the Lady Redhounds dropped a heartbreaker 35-31 to Whitley County.
“The tournament was very tough. The girls played with a lot of heart. I’m very proud of them. We were very excited about how we represented our school and families so well. This team is very special to me.”
