Lady Cards blitz M’boro

By Les Dixon / Sports Editor

Morgan Johnson powered her way to a 21-point effort, while South Laurel outscored host Middlesboro 23-6 during the second quarter of the Lady Cardinals’ convincing 59-39 win over the Lady Yellow Jackets.

South Laurel trailed 17-13 at the end of the first quarter, but put the game out of reach by outscoring Middlesboro 38-13 in a 16-minute span.

“This is a big win for us,” South Laurel coach Konnie Snyder said. “That is a very hard place for us to play at and I believed we really played well.”

The Lady Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 17-13 edge, but couldn’t recover after the Lady Cardinals outscored them by 17 points in the second quarter, while South Laurel led 36-23 at halftime.

“We really played with a high energy level tonight and we played with a lot of intensity, too,” Snyder said. “I wasn’t really pleased with the way we played during our two scrimmages, but the girls really played well tonight.”

Jessica Dean (10 points) was the only other player to score in double digits for the Lady Cardinals.

South Laurel will be back in action again on Friday at home against Harlan County.
