Williamsburg senior Becky Sharpe captured her second straight 9th Region Individual championship, while guiding the Lady Yellow Jackets to their first-ever 9th Region team championship.
Jeff Sharpe’s squad came up one shot short of winning the regional crown last season, but their fate would be different this time around, as the Yellow Jackets shot a 324, which was 18 shots better than runner-up finisher Russell County’s 342.
“This was a huge win for us,” Jeff Sharpe said. “Especially after losing by one stroke last year. This is the school’s first region championship and I’m really proud of the girls’ efforts.
“Overall, this was a team effort,” he added. “Everyone focused on the team plan and we were able to get the win. This was a long-time coming.”
Williamsburg received a tremendous effort from Becky Sharpe, who led all scorers with a 72, while teammate freshman Bethany Jervis placed second with a 76.
“This makes it two years in a row for Becky,” Jeff Sharpe said. “As a coach/parent, I am very proud of her. It’s tough to come into your senior year and fighting through pressure and still get a win. She responded well really well.”
Another player that stepped up was Jervis.
“The future looks bright, that’s for sure,” Jeff Sharpe said. “Bethany’s play was a big reason why we won by as many shots as we did. She really stepped up for us out there. I’m super proud of what she’s done. A second place finish is great.”
Now Williamsburg will shift it’s focus to Bowling Green and the state tournament. The Lady Yellow Jackets finished in sixth place last season during their first-ever appearance and will enter this year’s tournament as one of the teams to beat.
“I think we are sitting in a good spot,” Jeff Sharpe said. “Sacred Heart and Green County are two of the top teams and they’ve been there before, so hopefully they’ve got pressure on them.
“I really think the pressure is off us,” he added. “We finished sixth last year and it’s a two-day tournament, so we’re going to see what happens.”
North Laurel’s Caroline Moore (shot a 78) will be joining Pulaski County’s Elsa Moberly and Tayler Dick along with Rockcastle County’s Hannabeth Owens.
Lindsay Ingle eld Corbin with an 89, while Morgan Walker turned in Whitley County’s best score with an 81. Lauren Bohl fired a team-best 94 for Barbourville, while Anna Owens shot a 96 for Knox Central.
“Congratulations to Williamsburg’s Jeff Sharpe, they have been the best team in our region for the past several years and really excelled this year, led by senior phenom, Becky Sharpe,” Corbin coach Guy Jones said. “I believe they can win the state championship this year if they play their best. We all will be rooting them on to victory.”
