CORBIN —

The South Laurel Lady Cardinals managed to play the waiting game long enough to hold off the slow, but tactical effort of the Lady Jaguars for a 58-46 win over their cross-town rivals.
Eddie Mahan’s short-handed Lady Jaguars came in with a game plan to slow the game down and although they managed to keep the Lady Cardinals from getting into a rhythm, Konnie Snyder’s team was able to score enough baskets to get the win.
“We wanted to spread them out,” Mahan said. “We thought they couldn’t guard us well man to man, but we knew they were a good team.”
South Laurel was able to score 10 points in the first quarter and take a 10-6 lead, thanks to eight points by Macy Clontz. Clontz led all scorers with 23 points on the night.
South Laurel’s Bailey Miller knocked down a three-pointer early in the second quarter and Clontz scored seven of her team’s next nine points to give the Lady Cardinals a 22-18 lead at the half.
North Laurel managed to stay close thanks to a coast-to-coast basket by Kayla Bruner and back-to-back three-pointers by Samantha Proffitt and Jessica Boggs.
North Laurel took a 27-26 with 2:41 remaining in the third quarter after a three-pointer by Boggs and a floater by Bruner capped off a 6-0 run.
South Laurel’s Taylor Arthur stepped up and found her way to the free throw line, Preslie Baker hit a three-pointer, Karli Parker connected on a spin move in the lane and Bailey nailed a three-pointer to give the Lady Cardinals a 36-27 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Bruner stepped up late for North Laurel as she finished back-to-back three-point plays to pull her team within four points at 44-40 with just under two minutes remaining in the game. She led the Lady Jaguars with 12 points on the night.
Mahan was not happy with what appeared to be a missed over-the-back call with under a minute left in the game and his team trailing 48-40, so he voiced his opinion and it earned him two technical fouls and an early exit.
South Laurel made 20 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
Arthur finished with 16 points, while Miller added 10 points and Baker chipped in five points on the night.
