CORBIN —
Special to the Times-tribune
The Corbin Lady Redhounds faced one of the top teams in the state at Tri-County Country Club as Becky Sharpe led Williamsburg with a 1 under par round of 35 for the victory.
Williamsburg shot a team score of 167, without one of their top five players while Corbin shot a team score of 184.
“It was a great experience for our girls to play one of the top teams in the state,” Corbin coach Guy Jones said. “Williamsburg is very experienced and is coming off winning the All “A” championship.”
Jones was impressed with the quality of golf that the Lady Jackets play.
“Williamsburg has a tremendous program that all schools should model their program after,” he said. “They are the premier program in our area with the best individual amateur in Becky Sharpe that has ever played in the Tri-County area. Becky has the complete game with a tremendous attitude to go with it.”
Corbin was led by junior captain Gabby Sadler with a 3 over 39.
“This is Gabby’s best round this year and all of last year,” Jones said. “She shot that good of a score while missing a three-foot birdie putt on hole three.”
Jones feels that Sadler’s good performance could have a positive effect on the team.
“This is a confidence booster for Gabby,” he said. “She had found her game a couple of days in a row during practice. She made some putting adjustments and continues to fine tune her 50-75 yard approach shots.”
Corbin placed two other girls in the 40s with Whitney Baker shooting a 45 and Lindsay Ingle shooting a 46.
“Whitney had a tough hole on No. 4 with a triple bogey or she would have been at her average,” Jones said. “Lag putting seems to be where Whitney is losing strokes so she was on the putting green after the round working on those putts. She is a tremendous competitor and wants to be the best.”
Jones was pleased with the way Ingle fought back.
“I was proud of Lindsay,” he said. “She made par on four of her last five holes after a tough start. She basically gutted out her round instead of quitting. That is what veteran players do, they never quit on a round because of a bad start.”
Jones is excited about the future.
“This round should help jump start Lindsay’s year,” he said. “People should come out and watch these young ladies play, they all take it very serious and play some fine golf.”
The Redhounds were able to measure their game against a quality opponent.
“This was a learning experience playing with Williamsburg,” Jones said. “Our girls were able to see what it takes to take their game to the next level.”
Corbin made significant improvement in team score over their first match, improving by 26 strokes as a team and it could have been 35 better.
Corbin will travel to Villa Madonna, in Independence, Ky. over the weekend to play in an 18-hole invitational.
“This is the first tournament like this for Corbin in the past two years and the girls are really excited about this opportunity,” Jones said. “I’m not sure if they are more interested in the Florence Mall or the tournament but they are excited.”
