The Corbin Redhounds traveled to South Laurel without two of their key players, Drew Farley and Brody Freeman, but the Cardinals were not about to show any mercy on their undermanned rivals as they pulled off a 3-0 victory.
“It was a good win,” South Laurel coach Harmon Hodge said. “Both teams missed golden opportunities. I’ll take the three goals we got though.”
Jeffrey Poston continued his impressive offensive attack by scoring all three of the Cardinals’ goals for a hat trick.
The Cardinals’ first goal of the match came during the 33rd minute of play.
The Redhounds managed to stay close as they only trailed 1-0 at the half, but Poston scored again during the 29th minute of the second half for the 2-0 Cardinal advantage.
Jonathan Nava set Poston up for his third goal with just under two minutes remaining in the game for the 3-0 final.
Corbin coach Armondo Cima was disappointed with his team’s effort and attitude.
“I’m a bit surprised at the effort,” he said. “South Laurel has good players, but they’re a very beatable team. I think man for man we are just as good as they are.”
Cima pointed to his team’s mindset with the loss of two leaders.
“Maybe we lack confidence in our teammates,” he added. “It’s not individual confidence but just not having confidence in our team.
“The effort just wasn’t there. You like to see your team play with a desire to win and we didn’t tonight. We seem to have a bit of uncertainty with a couple key players out. This is not the time to doubt your abilities.”
Hodge was pleased with his team’s performance.
“We did much better than we have been against good teams,” he said. “Corbin is a really tough team. I can’t say enough about our defense. I always preach that every player is a defender and they did a great job tonight.”

The Jaguars were looking for a little revenge after suffering a 61-54 loss to the Redhounds earlier in the season, but Trevor Hill was not going to let that happen as the eighth-grader from Corbin went up high to grab the rebound and tipped it back in at the buzzer to give his team a 52-50 win over North Laurel.
