District Sweep

By Tim Branstetter / Staff Writer

The Corbin Redhounds came out focused and determined and it paid off as they grabbed a 10-0 lead halfway through the first quarter and never looked back during an 87-48 victory over Whitley County.

The win enabled Corbin to finish 50th District play with an unblemished 6-0 record.

“Corbin came out on fire and really played well tonight,” Whitley County coach Chris Baker said. “Our kids didn’t respond well at all. We got down 10-0 and panicked.”

Matthew Taylor opened the game with the first four points for Corbin and Isaac Wilson scored the next nine points, including a three-pointer for a 13-2 advantage with 2:34 remaining. Wilson finished with 18 points, while Taylor added 11 points on the night.

The Redhounds led 17-4 at the end of the first quarter and the Colonels tried to rally with six points by Aaron Petrey, but a three-pointer by Taylor gave Corbin a 30-15 advantage with just under three minutes remaining in the second quarter. The Redhounds led 38-21 at the half.

“I thought our defense was really good tonight getting stops early,” Corbin coach Tony Pietrowski said. “Whitley County did a good job of keying in on Madison (Johnson), Isaac and Aaron (Manns). We had some other guys step up and play well. Taylor has really stepped up and played well for us and he did a great job tonight.”

Johnson got going in the third quarter and scored seven straight points for a 49-26 Redhound lead with 5:34 remaining. Johnson finished with 18 points on the night.

Wilson struck again in the third quarter with another nine point outburst to give the Redhounds a 58-37 advantage with under two minutes remaining.

“We talked about pushing the tempo,” Pietrowski said. “Isaac did a great job of that. That's typical of Isaac to make scoring runs like that.”

The Redhounds continued to push the tempo in the fourth quarter and outscored the Colonels 23-7. Several players came in the game and contributed for the Redhounds.

“Brody (Freeman) gave us a lift tonight,” Pietrowski said. “He had some offensive rebounds and steals. Just overall hustle from him was great. I’m very pleased with our bench, they have really been stepping up for us.”
