PERRY CENTRAL — After losing in the first round of the WYMT Classic on Tuesday, Brad Sizemore’s North Laurel Jaguars responded with a win on Thursday by defeating Betsy Layne, 59-50.
The win sets up a 13th Region showdown with Harlan County Saturday, who defeated Clay County in the other consolation game, 58-47.
“We had a really great first half,” Sizemore said. “We came out ready to play. We played with high intensity on defense and was able to get the ball into the post and execute. This was a great win for our team and now we will get the opportunity to play another good team on Saturday.”
North Laurel (10-8) jumped on Betsy Layne early and led 15-5 after the first quarter. The Jaguars managed to hold on to a 25-16 lead at halftime before taking a 38-26 edge into the final quarter of play.
That’s when eighth grader Peyton Broughton and senior Austin Rush took control by combining to score 15 points during the final eight minutes of play, which allowed North Laurel to wrap up the win.
Rush led the Jaguars with 15 points while Austin Thompson scored 11 and Broughton finished with 10.
