BEREA — The South Laurel Cardinals held on for a 49-46 win over Garrard County Saturday in the Berea Classic, improving to 2-3 on the season.
The win is the second in a row for the Cardinals after starting the season on a three-game losing streak. The first win came Thursday against 50th District foe, Whitley County.
The game remained close throughout the contest as the Cardinals managed to grab a slight edge at the end of the game thanks to free throws.
Brennan Miller led all scorers with 18 points, while Zac Baxter added 12.
“Tonight was one of those good hard-fought, find a different way to win kind of game,” South Laurel head coach Jeff Davis said. “We didn’t shoot the basketball well, we didn’t shoot free throws very well, but we kept defending and found a way to win.
“We kept rebounding when we needed rebounds and we found a different way to win a basketball game,” Davis added.
South Laurel will be back in action Tuesday as they travel to Corbin.
