Lynn Camp’s treacherous three-game schedule to open the season will be done once Lexington Christian pays a visit to Mitchell Field Friday.
The Wildcats’ slate hasn’t been too kind, as a 42-6 loss to Somerset combined with a 62-13 beating by Whitley County has David Mitchell’s squad desperately searching for a win.
It’s not going to come easy this week against the Eagles, who dropped a 20-12 decision to power Christ Presbyterian Academy, Tenn., 20-12.
“They are not the same team they were last year,” Mitchell said. “They did lose a lot of talented players from last year’s team.”
But Lexington Christian is still good.
Eagle quarterback Scout McAmy turned in a solid effort last week by completing four-of-16 pass attempts for 118 yards and one touchdown, but overall, Lexington Christian struggled offensively.
The Eagles ran for only 44 yards the entire game (McCamy led the way with seven rushes for 20 yards) and Lexington Christian was outgained in total yardage, 231-162.
“They do have seven starters back and they are still good — don’t get me wrong,” Mitchell said. “We know we’ve got a tough game ahead, so we’ve got to come out and be physical and be ready to play.”
Mitchell said his main concern with his team heading into Friday’s contest with Lexington Christian is his players’ confidence level.
“It just seems like we don’t believe in ourselves right now,” he said. “But more than anything, we just need a win. We just can’t keep using youth as an excuse.
“It is what it is — we have players and we’re going to have to play,” Mitchell added. “We have 29 players on the team and 21 of those are freshmen and sophomores, but we’re just going to have to go back to the days when we played hard and didn’t care who we played. If we do that, I like our chances Friday.”
Lynn Camp is trying to avoid going 0-3 for the third time since 2000.
The Wildcats also began the 2009 and 2000 seasons with 0-3 records.
“We know it’s going to be tough, but we’ve just got to go out there and play,” Mitchell said. “We’ve got to stop making mental mistakes and play solid defense.
“If we can do those things, I believe you’ll see a better team,” he added. “But we’ve got to be able to do those things first.”
