The South Laurel Lady Cardinals improved their winning streak over North Laurel to 29 straight matches with a 25-15, 25-23 win at home.
“We are still intimidated by South Laurel,” North Laurel coach Bill Abner said. “We’ve never won a set against them.”
The Lady Cardinals grabbed an early 5-1 lead during the first set with four points on serve by Shelley Nunley and pulled out to a 14-5 advantage with a couple of plays around the net by Morgan Johnson.
Tara Deaton scored three points on serve for South Laurel including two aces for an 18-12 lead. The Lady Cardinals held on for a 25-15 victory.
The second set was much tighter as Kenna Wyatt and Kelsie Smith stepped up. After trailing 5-2, the Lady Jaguars tied the score at 6-6 and again at 9-9 on a kill by Wyatt.
Smith added a kill and a block, but North Laurel found themselves trailing 17-12. Samantha Proffitt and Courtney Parsons added a couple of kills and North Laurel put together a comeback.
Tori Evans scored five straight points on serve, including two aces. Proffitt added another kill and the score was tied at 21-21.
The Lady Cardinals then turned to Erika Burchett who scored two kills to push South Laurel to a 25-23 victory. Burchett finished with eight kills and 10 digs, while Johnson added four kills and 11 digs.
“They relaxed in the second set,” South Laurel coach Fawn Greer said. “They thought they had it, but they pulled through though. They just lost their focus. It’s always a good game when we play North Laurel.”
