The Corbin Redhounds were able to work on improving their overall team play as they handed Middlesboro a 7-0 defeat.
The starters were challenged to work on getting better rather than just scoring goals.
“We’ve not been playing very good team soccer,” Corbin coach Armondo Cima said. “I told the boys that scoring a goal is not the most attractive part of soccer, it’s the buildup to scoring a goal.”
For the most part Cima was pleased with the way his team responded. Eric Young, Drew Farley and Cameron Lambert all scored two goals, while Adam Sears added one.
The Redhounds led 3-0 at the half and added four more goals in the second half.
While Cima noted he doesn’t like to run up the score, he was willing to leave the starters in if they were making improvements in their team play.
“I told them as long as they worked as a team I would leave them in,” he said. “For the most part, they did that.”
Cima noted how difficult it could be to maintain focus in a lopsided contest.
“There were times when they kind of relaxed,” he said. “But it’s hard to keep your focus when the score is not close.”
Cima feels his team made some improvements during their win.
“We took some steps forward,” he said. “There were times where we were attempting to play good soccer even though the opponent didn’t demand it and that’s hard to do.”
The Redhounds were pleased to have Farley back in the lineup after being sidelined with an injury.
“Drew adds a different dimension,” Cima added. “He is a senior and he has a lot of composure. He did some good things tonight. I was really happy with what he was able to do. It’s difficult to be the guy that tells everyone, ‘we are not going to play like that,’ we are going to move the ball around. He can be that kind of player.
“Hopefully we can get Brody (Freeman) back next week. We are trying to get healthy mentally and physically.”
