Potential of old school storm brings back memories

Les Dixon

Usually, I reserve this space to talk about sports. Usually high school sports and sometimes UK basketball and even the Cincinnati Bengals and the Atlanta Braves.

But today, I’m shifting gears.

I’m not talking about sports, I’m focusing on the old school snowstorm we will be getting today, tonight and Saturday.

For you that know me know that I love three things — my family, Christmas time and snow.

Actually lots of snow — the more the better.

Yep, when it snows I become a little kid again.

Any time there is even a chance of us getting an inch or more of the white stuff, I get so excited that my wife tells me I get on her nerves.

The sad part of all of this is that I believe I get more excited about the chances of getting an old school snowstorm than my little girls do.

But the reason I believe why that is the case is because Leslie, who is 9 years old, and Sydney, who is 4 years old, haven’t ever seen an old school snow before.

Heck, the biggest snow they’ve seen were the four inches we got about a month ago.

So they really don’t understand why I’m making such a big fuss about the possibility of getting a foot of snow — or even more.

The last time I can remember getting that much snow is during my senior year in high school back in 1993.

My friends and my brother and I made tunnels, igloos and everything else you could make in my front yard.

Heck, it looked like we had made the Rebel base back on the planet Hoth from the movie Empire Strikes Back.

That’s how much fun the snow was.

But since then, we’ve had nothing, I mean absolutely nothing to brag about. Snow makes football fun. And when we were tired of goofing off in the snow, we retreated back into my house to play Super Tecmo Bowl, but that’s a story for another day.

We used to always play football games in front of South Laurel High School when it snowed, and to be honest, I hope to get the chance to do that this weekend.

But then again, I’m 17 years older now, and that might not be a great idea, but, I could just be the all-time quarterback.

If that plan doesn’t go through, I’m sure myself and Sydney will be building some great tunnels, snowmen and whatever else she wants to build this weekend.

Heck, we might even try to build a Taylor Swift snowwoman, who knows.

I realize I might be going a bit overboard, but there are a lot of people who are like me.

Don’t believe it?

Well, just go on over to Chris Bailey’s (yep, the former WKYT weatherman) Web site (www.kentuckyweathercenter.com) and you’ll see. His Web site is awesome. Bailey is the best around — no doubt about it.

He was talking about this winter storm two weeks ago, while one meteorologist was rolling his eyes and taking shots at Bailey.

But in the end, Bailey proved he is the top dog when it comes to weather forecasting.

So with that said, brace yourself Barbourville, Corbin, London and Williamsburg. We should be in for a fun ride today, tonight and Saturday. Go out and enjoy it with your kids. This is an old school storm and we don’t get these much any more, so enjoy it while it lasts.

Bring on the snow.

  • Les Dixon Could this year’s Wildcats beat the 1996 version? I don’t believe so

When it comes to high school basketball, it’s never too late to talk about next year. So if you’re a Williamsburg Lady Yellow Jacket fan, you’ve got to be happy with the All ‘A’ Classic 13th Region draw you received, but if you’re a Yellow Jacket fan, you might not be as happy.

The past two weeks I’ve been bombarded by high school basketball fans on who will be the 2011 Times-Tribune Boys and Girls Prep Basketball Tri-County Players of the Year.
Well we still have a few weeks to go before postseason play begins, but I suppose I can let the cat out of the bag and at least be nice enough to give the front-runners.
