CORBIN —
Both myself and Tim Branstetter didn’t know what to expect when we ventured north to Lexington to attend the annual Kentucky Press Association 2011 Excellence in Kentucky Newspapers contest this past Friday.
We both thought the Times-Tribune sports department had a good chance of winning some awards, but we’ve also been around long enough to not get our hopes up.
But with that said, I’d like to say — Friday was a good day for the Times-Tribune in general. The paper racked up awards on both the sports and news sides and the 16 combined awards were good enough for second place overall with the Winchester Sun taking home top honors.
On the sports’ side of things, we did about as good as we could have asked for. We took home top honors for the Best Sports Section in Daily Class I. That’s the second time in four years the Times-Trbune sports department has taken home the top honor, while the Richmond Register won the other two times. We also won first place honors for Best Sports Story (North Laurel vs. South Laurel 13th Region Fastpitch title game); Best Sports Picture Essay and Best Graphic.
We placed second in Best Headline; third in Best Sports Picture; placed third and Honorable Mention in Best Sports Picture Essay while also earning Honorable Mention in Best Sports Section.
I’ll be the first to say none of these accomplishments could take place if we didn’t have some of the best student-athletes, Little Leaguers, ect. to cover in the entire state. They are the reason we accomplished what we did. They are the ones out there busting their behinds, supplying us the action that gives us the opportunity to report and take pictures of their events or to simplify it even more — to do our job.
But that’s not all.
It takes a team to be successful and none of this could have happened if not for the work of Tim Branstetter, John Stepp, Darrin Spencer, Brad Hall and Becky Killian. They go above and beyond to make sure events are covered and things are edited.
And with that said — it’s time to get back to work.

Interesting week ahead for local teams
Believe it or not, in just two days the postseason will begin for our baseball and softball teams in the Tri-County and with that said, it’s time for me to pull out my old trusty crystal ball and give my two cents worth on what to expect once postseason play begins.

Fear 'Les' Diamond Ratings
The Lady Jaguars are winners of 14 straight, but if they hadn’t turned in a solid showing against McCreary Central, I was close to moving them to the No. 2 spot.

Mitchell might be back on the sidelines sooner than later
It’s been two days since former Lynn Camp coach David Mitchell was informed he was fired and from what I’m hearing, it might not be long at all before Mitchell is back on the sideline coaching.

So who will UK replace with Indiana and North Carolina?
I sure hate to see Kentucky drop Indiana and North Carolina from its schedule. I love to watch Kentucky play those two storied programs, and I really don’t know how you could replace them on the schedule.

Kudos to Chris Hart
I would like to give out a Big Time Timmy Gem to Corbin softball coach Chris Hart for getting his 100th career win.

Big Blue fantasy draft
After hearing a little debate about which team is better between the 1996 Wildcats and the 2012 Wildcats I decided to do a draft with my buddy and Times-Tribune assistant editor, Brad Hall.

I’ve got lots to ramble about
It’s been more than a week since I last rambled about sports and with that said, I’m not going to waste anyone’s time, so let’s get to it.

The Lady Jaguars are hitting on all cylinders right now. North Laurel has positioned itself as the team to beat in the 13th Region after defeating cross-town rival South Laurel this past week, 2-0.

Coaching kids isn’t easy, but it’s a lot of fun
Last weekend was one of the greatest sports moments of my life.I couldn’t be more proud of my 6th grade travel basketball team, Southeast Elite, for winning the Smoky Mountain Classic in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.

Fundamentals are key to winning
When it comes to winning any sporting event at the high school level, it’s pretty simple, you need to score more points, runs, etc. than your opponent — that’s common knowledge.
