CORBIN — This is a first for me. I’m 4-0 and still going strong with my pick’ems. Today’s games get a bit harder, but hopefully, I’ll be able to keep my record perfect for at least another day.
• 13th Region Tournament at The Arena
First Round
Boys
Corbin 71, Bell County 55
This should be a solid first round matchup for 13th Region fans to enjoy.
We all know the Redhounds enter the game as the prohibitive favorite to capture another regional championship, but the Bobcats won’t be a pushover.
Bell County has improved tremendously since Corbin’s 19-point win to begin the season, but will give the Redhounds a big challenge today.
Tony Pietrowski’s squad might struggle some early on, but in the end, look for the Redhounds to advance to the 13th Region semifinals.
Clay County 74, Barbourville 58
I’ve got Clay County winning by 16 points, but don’t count out Barbourville.
Kevin Spurlock’s Tigers are 0-3 during their past three 13th Region Tournament first round games and they haven’t made a trip to Rupp Arena since 2001, but that can change this season.
Clay County has one of the most talented teams in the region and should cruise past Barbourville.
If Spurlock’s squad doesn’t have a double digit lead by the time the fourth quarter begins, look for a barnburner during the game’s final eight minutes.

The front-runners for the boys and girls Players of the Year are ...
The past two weeks I’ve been bombarded by high school basketball fans on who will be the 2011 Times-Tribune Boys and Girls Prep Basketball Tri-County Players of the Year.
Well we still have a few weeks to go before postseason play begins, but I suppose I can let the cat out of the bag and at least be nice enough to give the front-runners. -
I remember 1982 state championship game just like it was yesterday
It’s hard to believe it’s almost been 30 years since Chuck Broughton’s Laurel County Cardinals captured the 1982 Boys Sweet Sixteen state championship. I remember it like it was yesterday.

Fear 'Les' 13th Region Basketball Rankings
The Black Bears continue to win. Harlan County is now a perfect 10-0 against 13th Region teams and shouldn’t be tested again (region-wise) until its Feb. 10 battle against Jackson County and a Feb. 13 contest against Corbin.
