Les Dixon's 13th Region Pick 'ems

CORBIN — I’m not running on empty yet. My record sets at a pretty 6-0 so far, but I don’t want to jinx myself. To be honest today’s games are probably the hardest first round games I’ve had to pick so far.

• 13th Region Tournament at The Arena

First Round

Boys

South Laurel 71, Knox Central 62

The Cardinals have handled Knox Central during the teams’ first two meetings, but expect the third game to be a war.

The Panthers are hitting on all cylinders right now and don’t be surprised to see Knox Central pull off the win.

I’m going to make it simple.

South Laurel will win if the “Matt trio” — Matt St. John, Matt Gilbert and Matt Watkins — each score in double figures.

If only two of them accomplish the feat, the Panthers win.

Plain and simple, huh?

Well, of course, Knox Central’s Cody Miller must stay out of foul trouble against the Cardinals, but Tanner Broughton, Travis Canady and Johnathon Barger must have solid games, too.

Harlan County 64, North Laurel 58

Harlan County is now 100 percent healthy and I believe that will make a huge difference in this game. Don’t get me wrong, the Jaguars are talented and have improved tremendously over the season, but I believe the Black Bears will find a way to win.

If North Laurel wins, it’s going to be because of the play of Adrian Wardrup. The Jaguar senior needs to score 20-plus and he might just do it. I do know this game is going to be a heck of a one to watch and I can’t wait.

North Laurel enters region tournament play as one of the hottest teams not only in the 13th Region, but the entire state. The No. 10 state-ranked Lady Jaguars are winners of 17 straight while allowing only four runs during their last 10 games.

  • Les Dixon Interesting week ahead for local teams

Believe it or not, in just two days the postseason will begin for our baseball and softball teams in the Tri-County and with that said, it’s time for me to pull out my old trusty crystal ball and give my two cents worth on what to expect once postseason play begins.

The Lady Jaguars are winners of 14 straight, but if they hadn’t turned in a solid showing against McCreary Central, I was close to moving them to the No. 2 spot.

  • Les Dixon Mitchell might be back on the sidelines sooner than later

It’s been two days since former Lynn Camp coach David Mitchell was informed he was fired and from what I’m hearing, it might not be long at all before Mitchell is back on the sideline coaching.

  • Tim Branstetter So who will UK replace with Indiana and North Carolina?

I sure hate to see Kentucky drop Indiana and North Carolina from its schedule. I love to watch Kentucky play those two storied programs, and I really don’t know how you could replace them on the schedule.

After hearing a little debate about which team is better between the 1996 Wildcats and the 2012 Wildcats I decided to do a draft with my buddy and Times-Tribune assistant editor, Brad Hall.

It’s been more than a week since I last rambled about sports and with that said, I’m not going to waste anyone’s time, so let’s get to it.

The Lady Jaguars are hitting on all cylinders right now. North Laurel has positioned itself as the team to beat in the 13th Region after defeating cross-town rival South Laurel this past week, 2-0.
