Local teams looking good heading into district slate

BARBOURVILLE — After a nice vacation, it’s time to get back to work, but before I get ahead of myself and talk about some of the things that has taken place while I was gone, I want to give a big thanks to staff writer Chris Parsons, photographer Darren Spencer and correspondent John Stepp for their great work.

Even though I was off, I kept an aye on the sports pages and Chris did a fantastic job holding the fort down. He had some great stories and pictures that should be solid entries for next year’s Kentucky Press Association awards banquet. John spent his entire time after Christmas covering Williamsburg’s Second Annual Holiday Shootout and turned in some impressive work as well while Darren hit the road and took pictures of games at South Laurel, Williamsburg and Corbin and of course, did a fantastic job as usual.

So with that said, it gives me great confidence to take off even more this year — just kidding guys, just kidding.

Impressive holiday run

Tony Pietrowski’s Corbin Redhounds turned in a solid two weeks of play by finishing second in North Laurel’s Legacy Nissan Shootout while capturing the Cumberland Falls Invitational championship just last week.

The Redhounds posted an impressive 5-1 record during the two tournaments and have positioned themselves well heading into key district games this month.

Jaguars starting to peak

North Laurel looks to be hitting stride at the right time after winning its own Legacy Nissan Shootout with a 70-67 victory over Corbin in the finals. The Jaguars didn’t fare as well in the Rock Holiday Classic in Florida, going 1-2. They still managed to post a 4-2 mark during the holiday break and now have some key games coming up on the schedule.

Panthers looking good

After posting a 1-2 record in the Winterfest Tournament in Sevierville, Tenn., the Knox Central Panthers regrouped and won the Second Annual Williamsburg Holiday Tournament by posting a 3-0 mark.

Brian Evans’ squad is another team hitting stride at the right time with district games against Pineville, Barbourville and Lynn Camp on the horizon.

Knox Central will see exactly where it stands in the region with games against Pineville, Barbourville, Lynn Camp, South Laurel, Corbin and Harlan County coming up during the next two weeks.

Keep an eye on the Wildcats

A lot of people are overlooking the great job Clyde Dixon and his Lynn Camp Wildcats are doing after winning only three games last season.

The Wildcats are 8-7 after starting the 2012-13 campaign with a 1-3 mark. Dixon has done a fantastic job with his team while players such as Zach Smith, Justin Hammonds and Skylar McFarland have stepped their play up a notch.

Surprise, surprise

Who has the second-best record in the 13th Region?

If your answer is Richard Jones’ Lynn Camp Lady Wildcats at 11-2 then you are correct.

Lynn Camp kept things rolling during the Bowman Memorial Classic and the Pine Mountain Classic by posting an impressive 6-1 record during the stretch. They also captured the Pine Mountain Classic championship by putting together a perfect 3-0 record.

Making history

You can’t overlook what Andrea Hillard’s Barbourville Lady Tigers have accomplished so far this season. After getting off to a program-best 5-0 start, Barbourville has the third-best record in the 13th Region at 11-3.

Lady Redhounds rolling

After dropping a 65-57 decision to Mercer County on Dec. 7, the Corbin Lady Redhounds have put together an impressive 8-2 record, which includes going 3-1 in the Berea Lady Pirate Holiday Classic and 2-1 in the KSA Event Tournament in Florida.
