Redhounds’ win streak very impressive

Les Dixon

Can you believe we’re already through with the month of January? Man, time flies when you’re having fun, huh?

The countdown is already on for me — only 327 days until Christmas, and early word has it that we might have another winter storm bring some more snow this weekend.

Wouldn’t that be great?

With that said, it’s time to ramble.

• Redhounds running

Not many people are talking about the Corbin Redhounds’ 13-game win streak, which leaves me scratching my head.

Corbin hasn’t lost a game since Breathitt County handed the Redhounds a 79-78 loss back on Dec. 21, 2009.

Since then, Corbin’s closest games have been against Franklin County (69-58) and Whitley County (60-52). The Redhounds have outscored their opponents by 24.2 points per game during their streak.

Now that’s impressive.

• Sweet Sixteen draw

Once again, the Sweet Sixteen draw wasn’t a kind one to the 13th Region. Yep, the 13th Region champion will be playing the 11th Region champion, which could give us some interesting matchups.

How about former Corbin coach Billy Hicks going up against his former team or maybe even a matchup between two schools that have Cardinals as mascots and two coaches that have won state championships — Scott County and South Laurel.

On the girls’ side, the 13th Region got a favorable draw to reach Saturday’s Final Four. The 13th Region champion will face-off against the 8th Region champion with the winner playing the winner between the 16th and 14th Region champions.

• Kentucky suffers first loss

I’m beginning to believe it’s a wide open race for this year’s NCAA championship. The Wildcats showed they are human after dropping a road game to South Carolina, but they have also shown they are one of many teams that could make a run for a national championship. But I also believe teams such as Kansas, Villanova, Syracuse, Georgetown and Texas could make a run, too.

• Watch out for Lady Cardinals

All of the talk during the pre-season has been about the Clay County Lady Tigers, but you can’t count out the South Laurel Lady Cardinals when talking about who might win this season’s 13th Region championship.

The Lady Cardinals have the best record in the 13th Region at 17-3 and they are battle-tested. South Laurel has a lot of good teams already and will finish the season with one of, if not the toughest, remaining schedules in the state.

The Lady Cardinals will play North Laurel today, and will follow with games against Casey County, Sacred Heart, Clay County and Rockcastle County.

Ouch!

• Snow

I hope everyone enjoyed the snow we got this past weekend, and was able to enjoy it with their kids. From what I’ve been told, buckle down, February could be a good month for snow lovers around here.

  • Les Dixon Could this year’s Wildcats beat the 1996 version? I don’t believe so

When it comes to high school basketball, it’s never too late to talk about next year. So if you’re a Williamsburg Lady Yellow Jacket fan, you’ve got to be happy with the All ‘A’ Classic 13th Region draw you received, but if you’re a Yellow Jacket fan, you might not be as happy.

  • Les Dixon The front-runners for the boys and girls Players of the Year are ...

The past two weeks I’ve been bombarded by high school basketball fans on who will be the 2011 Times-Tribune Boys and Girls Prep Basketball Tri-County Players of the Year.
Well we still have a few weeks to go before postseason play begins, but I suppose I can let the cat out of the bag and at least be nice enough to give the front-runners.

  • Les Dixon I remember 1982 state championship game just like it was yesterday

It’s hard to believe it’s almost been 30 years since Chuck Broughton’s Laurel County Cardinals captured the 1982 Boys Sweet Sixteen state championship. I remember it like it was yesterday.

The Black Bears continue to win. Harlan County is now a perfect 10-0 against 13th Region teams and shouldn’t be tested again (region-wise) until its Feb. 10 battle against Jackson County and a Feb. 13 contest against Corbin.
