Whitley Grand Jury hears evidence on 911 Director

CORBIN — By Charlotte Underwood / Staff writer

The Whitley County Grand Jury heard evidence concerning 911 Director Chuck Davis during its meeting on Sept. 5, but continued the case to be investigated further, according to court documents.

The case regarding Davis involves an investigation into possible theft by unlawful taking over $500 but less than $10,000.

The investigation stems from when Davis worked as a detective under former Whitley County Sheriff Lawrence Hodge, according to current Whitley County Sheriff Colan Harrell.

Sheriff’s Department Capt. Greg Pace, who was recently assigned to the London office of the FBI to investigate public corruption and organized crime, is conducting the investigation into the alleged missing money, according to Harrell.

“The investigation encompasses his  (Davis’) duties as a detective from when he worked under Hodge,” Harrell said, adding that he had “talked to the commonwealth attorney about the shortage of funds and what to do with it and his recommendation was to take it before the grand jury.”

According to Harrell, grand jury investigations can be continued at the request of those being investigated if they wish to testify or present evidence to the grand jury, though he said he could not confirm that this was the reason the grand jury’s investigation had been continued.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Allen Trimble said that he could not comment on a pending grand jury investigation.

The grand jury is slated to meet again on Oct. 1.

Davis was one of 27 witnesses who testified before a specially-called Whitley County Grand Jury that investigated Hodge and indicted him on multiple charges of abuse of public trust and tampering with physical evidence.

He was hired as the Whitley County 911 Director in June of 2010.

Davis did not wish to comment when contacted on Friday.
