A former Whitley County sheriff’s bookkeeper admitted in court Thursday that she embezzled money from the office.

Abby Vicky Paul, 50, said that from the first year former Whitley County Sheriff Lawrence Hodge was in office, she noticed money missing from tax collections. Paul said Hodge told her to fix the books to conceal the missing money.

In later years of Hodge’s service, Paul and another employee, Kendra McKiddy, began to split some of the embezzled money. Paul admitted to the embezzlement while in London’s U.S. District Court as part of a plea agreement. Her sentencing date is set for Sept. 1, 2011.

She could face a maximum 10-year sentences followed by a maximum 3-year supervised release and could be fined a maximum of $250,000.
