If the first game of the 2012 Cumberland Falls Invitational Tournament is any indication of how the rest of the tournament will go, you won’t want to miss the action from here on out.
The Barbourville Tigers battled back from an 11-point halftime deficit and had a chance to win the game at the buzzer, but in the end fell to Jackson County 66-65.
After watching Barbourville take a lead on a pair of free throws with 21 seconds to play, the Generals’ regained the lead with 5.3 seconds to go.
An old-fashioned three-point play by Zach Lawson put Jackson County ahead, 66-65, and the final shot by the Tigers’ Devon Mills was off the mark, giving the Generals the win.
After the game, Barbourville coach Dinky Phipps said he was pleased with his team despite the final outcome.
“I’m happy with the way my kids battled back after the first half that we had,” Phipps said. “We could have just laid down and quit, but we made some big shots to get back in the game.
“We gave ourselves a chance to win it and had a good shot at it to end the game, but we couldn’t get it to fall,” he added. “Jackson County is a good team and they’ve got some kids that can play good basketball. We just have to recover and get back at it tomorrow night.”
