Getting down to business

CORBIN — Workers were getting down to business at the old Corbin East School site Tuesday afternoon, as they transform the old school into Greater Corbin Housing Apartments.

“The physical work began after Thanksgiving, and the anticipated date for the work to be finished is the spring of 2014,” said Housing Authority of Corbin Director Dora Mobley, who also serves as secretary for Greater Corbin Housing.

Asbestos in the building has been removed, and work continues to remodel and upgrade the structure. Housing Partnership, Inc. of Louisville is partnering in the construction and rehabilitation of the building, with a total of $4.5 million in private money funding the work.

When finished, the building will have 32 affordable housing units. Mobley said the rent will be based on 60 percent of the median income the people who will qualify.

Greater Corbin Housing, a non-profit organization formed in 2005 by the Housing Authority of Corbin, purchased the building at the corner of Master Street and Hamlin Avenue. On Dec. 4, the organization bought the downtown building that formerly housed Thomasville Furniture.
