Tractor-trailer fire shuts down I-75 traffic

Northbound lanes stalled for almost an hour

CORBIN — By John L. Ross/Staff Writer

Northbound I-75 traffic was shut down for nearly an hour Wednesday after a tractor-trailer rig caught fire in the emergency lane.

“Who knows what happened,” said the truck’s driver, Jerry Boxell, of Portland, Ind. “Who knows?”

Boxell, who drives for Smith Consulting, based in Montpelier, Ind. said he was traveling north on I-75 when he “heard this pop.”

That’s when he said he pulled off to the side of the road.

“The tire (had blown) and the next thing I knew it was on fire,” he said.

Boxell was able to separate the rig from the trailer, which was loaded with steel sheeting, according to Kentucky State Police Sgt. Greg Reams.

“There was just smoke damage on the trailer — he was able to save that,” Reams said.

No charges are expected to be filed with this incident, he said.

Goldbug Volunteer Fire Department Chief Dorman Patrick Jr. said no one was injured. “They got the fire out pretty quick,” he said. “They did a great job.”

Whitley County Sheriff’s deputies closed the northbound lanes while fire crews managed the blaze. Besides Goldbug VFD, Woodbine Volunteer Fire Department brought their tanker to the blaze.

  • Thank you to owners of repeater systems

When you hear people say “ham radio” or “amateur radio” what do you think of? Perhaps a licensed citizen band radio, or maybe you think about a radio the size of a window air conditioner.
